Big Delicious Planet

About Us

Big Delicious Planet is a hidden gem in West Town that has evolved from a backstage rock ’n’ roll caterer founded in 1994 to become the certified “Greenest Caterer in America” since 2013. Owner Heidi Moorman Coudal transformed three city lots into a lush urban farm with 77 raised beds of organic produce and three beehives. The farm doubles as an event space for weddings, private events, and a ticketed dinner series during the summer.

Staying Sustainable

In 2013 BDP became the first caterer in the country to earn 4-Star Certified Green Restaurant status from the Green Restaurant Association, and still holds the title of “Greenest Caterer in America.” We have our own organic urban farm where we have three beehives and grow dozens of varieties of vegetables, fruits, herbs, and edible flowers. Each year we harvest thousands of pounds of crops from our own farm, with our highest crop yield being tomatoes. We also grow microgreens and herbs indoors year-round. We support many local farms and purveyors to source what we don't grow ourselves.

Our building uses sustainable geothermal energy for our water heater, heating, and air conditioning. We recycle and compost. We use compostable and eco-disposables for all of our corporate drop-off jobs. We compost all food scraps and compostable paper goods. Finished compost is used to nourish the crops growing in our urban farm. We conserve water with faucets that have a lower water flow. Our cleaning chemicals meet the highest green standards. Since 2011 we have donated all our used vegetable oil to a biodiesel service, which turns it into fuel for shuttle buses and glycerin for soap for Loyola University.
